See this latest publication on Vula’s impact. “Harnessing referrals as a novel data source for improving primary health care workers” performance in Ethiopia. The challenge was to improve maternal health outcomes. Ethiopia has one of the highest maternal mortality ratios with 267/100,000 births.

The University of Gondar (Northern Ethiopia) and the Ethiopian Ministry of Health used a catalytic grant from Jhpiego to use Vula to improve maternal health outcomes by strengthening the obstetric referral system. Vula runs software that connects health workers to get patients to the right healthcare. Most health records are on paper and the data is digitally invisible, however, by using Vula valuable data is generated and made available for quality improvement and performance management. Every study reveals areas where we can improve Vula and you can read one of the lessons in the paper, calling for localisation and scaling up of the digital referral system.

Note: this project came to an end after the war in Northern Ethiopia returned to the Amhara region.
